It’s safe to assume that there has, at one point, been someone in your life that has gotten married. And an even better chance that that particular individual mentioned being “stressed” from planning at least once.
Planning your wedding can be one of the most exciting and the ultimate “bonding” experience you will have as a couple. Yet, there are instances where it can be so overwhelming that it might feel as though it overshadows the joy of marrying the love of your life and celebrating with your nearest and dearest. You are not alone in this feeling. However, with some thoughtful preparation and a few tips to ease the pressure, you can enjoy a smooth and enjoyable day with as little stress as possible:
- Hire a Wedding Planner/ Day of Coordinator
- The simplest way to reduce wedding stress is to hire a wedding planner. They are professionals in making a wedding run smoothly, and are quite literally there to reduce the stress of curating your special day. Use your wedding planner for resources, advice, questions, and all things wedding!
- Create a Timeline
- The best way to ensure your wedding runs smoothly in the background while you are focusing on your partner, is a timeline. Give one to everyone: vendors, parents, MOH or Best Man. This way everyone knows what to expect and to stay on top of things without you needing to step in.
- Set Boundaries Early
- Establish clear boundaries with family members, friends, and even yourself. Know when to say no when it is needed because without boundaries, you may find yourself sacrificing what you and your partner truly want for your big day.
- Delegate, Delegate, Delegate!
- You don’t have to do everything yourself. If you have family or friends that are offering to help, take them up on it! Assign specific tasks to reliable people: whether it’s packing wedding favors, gathering mailing addresses, or helping out on the big day. Delegate so that you may focus on the tasks that are most important to you, without stressing about the small stuff, literally!
- Take Care of Yourself
- Planning can sometimes feel mentally exhausting. It’s important to set time aside for yourself and your partner. Start with a dedicated day together 1-2 times a month leading up to the big day. A spa day or a weekend away, whatever you need to rest, relax, and recharge.

- Be Authentic
- The day is all about you as individuals and a couple, so embrace uniqueness. Don’t worry if your wedding doesn’t look like a Pinterest board, or isn’t “traditional.” If it’s a reflection of you as a couple, do it! Trust your instincts and have a little fun with making the day all about your unique love story.
