So, you have been asked to MC a wedding, what an honor. Here are some helpful tips to ensure you give the best speech possible.
- Be Prepared. Don’t come to the reception expecting to wing the entire thing. Make sure to check with the couple being married or their wedding coordinator what the timeline for the day will be. When the grand march is taking place, when supper will be served, any games they want to do, and anything else they have asked you to announce. Make sure you know who will all be making speeches; and that you know everyone’s name.
- Introduce yourself. Let them know who you are and how you know the married couple. You can tell a funny story or go the heartfelt route.
- Keep up with the timeline. A very important role of the MC is making sure the night rolls on time. Make sure the speeches begin when they are supposed, making sure everyone is in their seats for when the grand march begins, if you have been asked to tell the guests which tables can go eat, starting any games on time, and if you are in charge of announcing the dances.
- Practice, practice, practice. Especially if you tend to get nervous talking in front of large groups of people. Read your speech over to yourself or have someone listen and make suggestions.
- Know your audience. It’s always a good idea to check in with the couple for the vibe they want. See if you can get a general feel for who will be attending the wedding. For example, if there will be a lot of kids there, would probably be best to watch the language you use.
- Good Vibes. Like it or not, you have a big roll in the mood of the wedding. Your enthusiasm and energy will keep the crowd engaged through the speeches. Keep things light and it is always good to check in if there are any things that the couple does not want brought up.
